What is Insul-Bright?

Is your next project too hot to handle or too cold to hold? What you need is Insul-Bright! Learn all about Insul-Bright in this tutorial.

Insul-Bright is an insulated wadding that keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. It is made from metalised polyester film, with Polyester fibres needled through it. The polyester film reflects energy, hot or cold. The needled material is breathable and the fibres help resist conduction. You can use it for a variety of simple yet practical projects for the family and the home.

How to use Insul-Bright

  • To iron, sandwich Insul-Bright between cotton fabrics and use a low heat setting
  • It can be washed up to 40 degrees and can be tumble dried up to medium heat
  • The metal film will dull needles, we recommend using a medium weight needle 90/14

No, Insul-Bright is heat resistant but not heat proof. It is also recommended not to be used in the microwave.

  1. I love Insul-Bright! I generally use it with a layer of natural (not synthetic) wadding as on it’s own it tends to be a little ‘skinny’. Additional wadding can also absorb moisture and this also helps to avoid heat transfer when using for things like pot mitts.
    Because Insul-Bright is stable and doesn’t break down in the wash, it doesn’t need quilting as closely as regular wadding. I often quilt lightly without the Insul-Bright (particularly if I’m using traditional patchwork or Foundation Paper Piecing) and then add some additional quilting when I am putting the item together.
